A day in the life of an old woman. She is Ruth Caster Hubble, a cantankerous 88, who lives in a condo in Laguna Beach, California. For company she has her second husband, Henry, king of the boobs as she calls him. The novel describes her daily routine, handling her aches and pains, worrying over her granddaughter's bad boyfriend, bossing Henry and reminiscing on her first husband. The novel analyzes the paradox of the human need for illusion, at the expense of reality, in order to maintain sanity.
